Lucy Maud Montgomery said it best — I’m grateful for Octobers. Autumn can be a glorious, though exhausting, season to walk through. I love watching the leaves burst into their vibrant death-throes as the days grow shorter and colder. Right now, all the elm trees in our city are glowing gold, and everyone in Saskatoon dreads the swift winds that will soon strip the branches bare.
This past week has been a gift to be outside. From a wild night escaping the city with friends to catch the dancing northern lights, to a quick trip with Danny to hike among the falling leaves in a national park, we’ve all been trying to savour this fleeting season.
Today marks a significant personal milestone for me — I finally sent off the long-fought-for child support agreement to the province’s maintenance enforcement office.
It took us 636 days, but Emma finally has her freedom and the support she deserves.
I can hopefully now officially retire from my family law career — one more thing off my plate.
We didn’t get the big dramatic moment in Chambers, but I’m satisfied knowing my ex’s attorney was outmatched. The judge saw things my way and even gave me more than I asked for. In the end, the attorney wrote her own client’s name wrong on the court order, and I made her fix it.
She may have tried to paint me as vexatious and litigious, but ultimately, she’s the one who looks incompetent.
I’m looking forward to only having two full-time jobs.
Things that brought me joy this week:
It’s been a week of lots of friend connections: from a mehndi celebration for a good friend, to coffee dates, Zoom catchups, writing groups, family suppers, and gossip sessions — I’ve got a village around me. I love y’all.
Last week was the annual Canadian Federation of University Women’s book sale, and I got quite the haul — TWO Julia Cameron books! The universe is telling me to read:
PhDing: Our paper got accepted for the Hawaii International Conference On Education! I’m tag-teaming with my friend Maryellen, who’s also a fellow PhD candidate, and our paper is titled: “Safe Spaces: Implementing Harm Reduction Strategies in University Settings.” I AM SO PUMPED!! Emma is actually coming along too, so it’ll double as a celebration for her finishing grade 12.
Watching: The last part of Season 7 Love is Blind. (WTF Ramses?) Reading: Scrivener tutorials. Listening: to the girl downstairs singing (badly).
Meme of the week:
Take advantage of the many customized t/shirt ads that clog social media and get one with “Vexatious & Litigious” on it.
